Remember the zoom of the image

In this study, you must remember how zoomed in or out an image was. On each trial, you'll see an image briefly, and then it will disappear. Another version of the image will then appear.

Your job is to decide whether this second "probe" image is closer-up or farther-away than the first image. In other words, whether this second image was "zoomed in" or "zoomed out" compared to the first image.

For example, observe the below images. Imagine that the first image you were shown was the image on the left, and the second "probe" image was the one on the right.

Since the probe image is closer-up ("zoomed in") compared to the first image, you would respond "closer", by pressing the CLOSERKEY key.

Now observe the below images. Imagine again that the first image was the image on the left, and the second "probe" image was the one on the right.

Here, since the probe image is farther-away ("zoomed out") compared to the first image, you would respond "farther", by pressing the FARTHERKEY key.

You must pay close attention to both the first and second image! Every so often, you will be tested in "catch" trials.

On catch trials, you will not be asked about image zoom. Instead, you will be asked whether the first and second image are exactly the same or completely different. For "same", you will press SAMEKEY, and for "different", you will press DIFFKEY.

There is no trick here: If you are paying attention, the answer in each case will be obvious.

The whole study will only take about 6 minutes; please stay focused!

(Note: When the experiment is done, you will be redirected back to SYSTEM's webpage where you will be given a completion code.)

To start off, you'll do a set of practice trials.

These trials are purposely made to be easy, so you can get a feel for the task. Note that trials in the real experiment will be much harder!

Click "Start Practice" to begin.

You have finished the practice trials. The real experiment will now begin.

Note that these trials will be much harder, and you will not receive feedback about your performance!

Just respond as best as you can, even though the task will be difficult.

Click "Start Experiment" to begin.

Study Progress
Is this "probe" image closer-up or farther-away than the first image?
FIRSTKEY = FIRSTRESP, SECONDKEY = SECONDRESP
Is this "probe" image exactly the same or completely different from the first image?
SAMEKEY = same, DIFFKEY = different
Done! After you answer the below questions, you will be brought to the submission page:

1. What was your strategy for performing the task?

2. Some of the photographs you saw were visually different or special in a specific way. What was different or special about them? (Just guess!)

3. What do you think was the purpose of this study? (Just guess!)
